This area in eastern U.S. is prone to landslides because it is located along the Appalachian Mountains where the slope is steep and if human features such as roads or buildings are built along these steep slopes it could cause a decrease in the strength of support of the slope thus causing a landslide to occur. This is also a big mining area and if these mining companies place additional weight on the slopes by dumping waste, or the building of structures, then the head loading from the materials could trigger a landslide to occur if it were to become weak and give out.
This is a map of the area located along the coast of California where there is a high landslide incidence or 15% of the area is involved in landsliding. This area is highly susceptible to landslides because this area is located along the San Andreas Fault, where the Pacific plate is sliding northwest along the North American plate. With this is displacement of land a landslide could occur easily along this area.
This area is located along the Rocky Mountains in western U.S. With the topography of steep slopes in the area, there is a possibility of a landslide to occur. This could be both human and naturally caused. Human structures on the slopes of the mountains could weaken the slopes with roads or structures being built, but it could also be the makeup of the rocks and soils in the area. This area is highly diverse and complex, making some soils and rocks weaker in certain situations making the area more prone to landslides.
